Join master fiddler John White and friends at the Boone County Fair the week of July 24 for some old-time music jams and barn dance. Every evening at the fair, we’ll be playing tunes handed down from generation to generation. Hear tunes your ancestors enjoyed when courting and dancing. You’ll hear fiddles, banjos, guitars, mandolins, basses, and maybe a jug.
All are welcome. If we can get a good enough turnout, this might become an annual event at the fair. We are looking for singles, families, kids, parents, grandparents, and friends to attend. Like in the old days, we plan to make our own fun and enjoy the company. We will have experienced callers and dancers at the barn dance to help you learn or relearn a dance if you wish. We aim to have fun. You are free to dance, listen, help play music, or just sit and watch if you wish.
The fair will supply ice water, a fan, chairs, and a table. We will be located at the front entrance to the multipurpose building in the shade of the building and nearby trees. On Tuesday and Wednesday we hope to promote the Wednesday Barn Dance. There are times when we can be in the air conditioned multipurpose room. It also looks like we can be inside on Wednesday and Thursday. Please be sure to consider your heat tolerance and plan accordingly. Wednesday and Thursday look like the best time to dodge the heat. (See following).
The easy part: Feel free just to play along however you want. You may not know all the tunes, but they’re pretty easy to catch on to. Absolutely all skill levels will do just fine at this jam.
The hard part: It will cost you $10 to get in. John tried to get passes, but with the precarious financial condition of the Fair, didn’t have much luck. Consider it your “donation” to keeping the Boone County Fair going.
